How Demos Become Records

I thought you might find it interesting how song ideas actually turn into the records, or CD’s you listen to every day. I’m going to use two of the songs on my new LEGACY album as examples, and I hope you can appreciate the process!

As you know, I’m a guitar player, or ‘picker’ as I like to say. So I usually sit with my instrument and begin playing chords, experimenting with rhythms and such until I start getting a melody in my head. The song evolves from there over time – sometimes quickly and other times not so fast. When I was writing with Rick Beneteau we’d either start with a lyric idea – a song title or line for a verse or chorus, or, I’d have a melody started and he’d start working with lyric ideas. However the process goes, there is no greater joy in my life than starting with nothing – and creating something – and having that something turned into world-class records.

Here is how the first evolution of Half a Man sounded as recorded by Rick and I in my home just after writing it. Compare the tracks of Half a Man below and I’m sure you’ll agree the top-notch session players who laid down the tracks did a fabulous job of capturing the bluesy feel Rick and I wanted. Enjoy!
